I’ve always had a passion for video games, Even when I was a little kid growing up my parents would hound me saying “Why don’t you go outside!” or “Why don’t you do something more productive with your time” , However that changed when I ended up making a career in the video game industry and was all like “You see it was all “study”.

With the start of my Latin American adventure only a couple of weeks away it got me thinking, how have video games prepared me for travel?

So I present the my totally serious list of how video games have prepared me for travel.

1. Taught me spanish

Game:Monkey Island 3

I’ve always been a huge adventure game fan and “Monkey Island 3” has to be one of my favorite games of all time. People who have played this game might remember the above section of the game where BlondBeard mistakes Guybrush for the infamous devil chicken resulting in his  saying the following in Spanish “MADRE DE DIOS, ES EL POLLO DIABLO!!!” which translates to “Mother of God, It’s the devil chicken”. But you ask how is this helpful?when could you possibly use that phrase to your advantage.

Well Ill give you a couple of  totally plausible scenarios

  • Someone attempts to rob me, I point off behind the robber and utter this phrase. The robber curious about the prospect of a devil chicken lurking behind him turns to look, which is when I make my stealthy escape. Either that or he chuckles at my joke, we become friends and he buys me a beer.
  • I am walking down the street when I come across a possessed looking evil chicken, Normally I wouldn’t know how to remark on this in Spanish but good old monkey island phrase comes to the rescue again.A passer by hear’s this witty remark and thinks that I’m awesome and we end up sailing the Caribbean in his private yacht for months on end eating the finest of exotic fruits.

2. Pro at packing different shaped items into my pack quickly

Packing my bag tetris style like a BAWS!!

Game: Tetris

It’s 5:50am when I wake up and glance over at my watch, FUCK! my shuttle bus to the airport arrives in 5 minutes and all of my possessions are strewn about the dorm room floor, that’s when I engage Tetris mode and quickly round up all my different shaped belongings and pack my bag with Tetris like precision. This does however have one flaw as most of my packing cubes are blue so it more often than not results in all of my stuff forming a line and disappearing into the Tetrisy abyss. But hey at least I get lots of points.

3.Limited pack size and carry limit? I’ve got this down!

Managing inventory and weight in Skyrim 😀

Games: Most commonly RPG’s and MMORPGS such as Skyrim, World of Warcraft etc

Managing the amount of inventory you can fit into your bags and even the amount of weight your character can carry are very common themes in video games, especially in RPG’s. I cant remember how many time’s I found myself crawling back at a snail’s pace to get to my house in Skyrim because I’d been to greedy and stuffed my pack with any random item I could find lying around.
This intricate knowledge of inventory management will be vital in my trip for making sure I can fit all of my items such as broad swords, cheeses and other crucial backpacking items. Plus if things get to heavy I can always find a + strength necklace to wear.

4. Are you lying to me? I can tell

Would I lie to you?

Game: La Noire

In LA Noire you play a detective and among other things have to talk to witness’s and determine if they are lying or telling the truth from small tells that they do. After playing this I am now some kind of human lie detector.  I shall not be falling for your clever rouse today sir,I see through your deceptive ways.

5. Sleep deprivation and extended periods of sitting in one place, Son that’s my every night!

Long bus/plane trips, changing time zones and functioning on very little sleep are some of the things you will encounter from when traveling. However as a gamer these conditions are not foreign, in fact I can’t even count how many time’s I have gamed the entire night away barely getting out of my chair and still had to drag myself to work the next day. In my MMORPG days when I was playing Asheron’s Call and World of Warcraft it would be common for me to spend 8+ hours a day gaming in front of the computer with completely messed up sleeping patterns as a result.

That’s why I say Pfft to your long bus/plane rides and messed up sleeping patterns. My body is prepared for this and if its not then that’s what caffeine was invented for right?

How have Video games prepared you for travel, Or anything else in life?

The only video game I’ve even been good at was Super Mario Smash Bros on a Nintendo 64, so I don’t know if that’s really going to help me out in travelling, but man, the devil chicken thing made me giggle! 😛

I learned from Dead Frontier (a zombie MMORPG) that if you are not careful the world will chew you up and not spit you out.

I haven’t played any similar type online games so can’t compare it to others but, yeah, I think it is very good – and has kept me amused for more hours than I care to admit. I don’t play when we are travelling but I do make sure to log in every now and again to keep my account active
