top10 travel songs

Everyone loves listening to music, It has that unique ability to completely change your mood or remind you of a special moment or time in your life when you first heard a particular song. Some songs you hear for the first time and instantly connect with them, Where others are made special by when and where or even who you were with when you first heard them.

For me I’ll never forget that night when I was at the rainbow gathering in the middle of Guatemalan jungle living with some 200+ hippies. This particular night we had 30 people in this small tent all in sleeping bags with one guy on guitar playing Tenacious D’s Tribute while everyone sang at the top of their lungs. I’ll also never forget those countless days on my Latin America trip where I would be in a hostel meeting amazing new people while the sweet tunes of Bob Marley played in the background. (Couldn’t seem to go 2 days without hearing Bob Marley haha)

So with that I present my top 10 travel music that inspires/reminds me of travel. Some of these song’s aren’t exactly travel related but to me they remind me how beautiful the world is and how important it is to be do what you want in life and be happy.

I have created a top 10 travel songs playlist on Nerd travels Youtube page for people who want to easily play everything in this post, Plus there is even a video on my page of me failing at playing the Guatemalan flute.

Rusted Roots – Send Me On My Way

This song is so fun and really captures the free spirit nature of traveling for me. Every time I hear this song I just wanna get a bunch of friends together, rent a van, fill it with instruments and pillows and go on a road trip 🙂 (Also I want to buy an outfit like the main singer in this haha)

Darren Hanlon – Couch Surfing

Darren is an Australian singer/songwriter from Australia. I originally heard this song on Triple J (One of Australia’s biggest radio stations) He did this awesome song about couch surfing.

James Blunt – Stay The Night

Love this song, It just really captures the spirit of summer for me and takes me back to all those awesome summer beach day’s spent hanging out with friends.

Backpacker Song – Kasper Raunholst

Found this song recently on you tube, Think this song does a great job of capturing what life is like to be a backpacker. Love the lyrics “You might be poor but rich on life”  and “On the road your heart beats to a different rhythm” they really hit home for me on the feeling I get when i’m travelling.

Bob Marley – Three Little Birds

Bob Marley, His music has so much soul and beauty in it. I got massively into Bob Marley while travelling through Central America.  I can’t listen to one of his song’s without feeling myself transported back to memories of relaxing on various beaches in the Caribbean. I love this song in particular and whenever I’m feeling down I just put it on and it instantly cheers me up and makes me remember “Don’t worry about a thing, ‘Cause every little thing gonna be all right.”

Passenger – Life’s For The Living

Passenger would have to be one of my favorite band’s. This song isn’t particularly about travel but it does carry a very powerful message that you should live your life. Every time I hear the lyrics “Life’s for the Living so live it or your better off dead” it really energizes me and reminds me to not be scared to live my life.

Sigur Ros – Hoppipolla

Sigur Ros would have to be my favorite band, Their music is truly inspirational and has gotten me through some of the darkest times in my life. Their music has always made me appreciate the simple things and how beauty is everywhere. I think their music does a brilliant job of just capturing the listeners imagination and inspiring greatness in anyone who listens to it.

Angus And Julia Stone  – Big Jet Plane

Ok so this one is a little bit bias, Angus and Julia stone would probably have to be on of my most listened to band’s over the past year. Every time I listen to one of their songs I just remember time’s where I was nervously sitting nervously on a plane or bus  travelling to a new exciting destination. I think their music holds a real simple beauty and innocence to it.

I love this song in particular as it reminds me how it’s so easy to get caught up in the every day 9-5 daily routine and forget to make time to for all the little things in life that make life beautiful and worth living.

Soja – Everything Changes

I will always remember when I first was introduced to SOJA, I was in a hostel in San Marcos Guatemala and an Argentinian girl from the USA introduced them to me. From that day forward I think I have listened to this band at least 3-5 times a week for the last 7 months. I love this song in particular as it really makes me appreciate what I have because there are people out there with things so much worse.

Bon Jovi – It’s My Life

This is on the list simply because it’s Bon Jovi come on… Plus I needed some cheesy goodness on this list. The message in this song “It’s my life it’s now or never, I aint gonna live forever I just wanna live while I’m alive”

Obviously this is just my top 10, But if you discover one new artist or song you like from this list my job is done

Thanks for sharing this on pinterest!

Thanks Hogga, How could I leave out Bob Marley? I originally wanted to just have all Bob Marley but I thought people would want some variety haha. 😉

For my US trip Queens Of The Stone Age (Particularly the Songs For the Deaf album) is quintessential. It really is the perfect soundtrack for driving across the endless American landscape. Stoner Rock + USA Road Trip = FUCKING WIN.
