Over the course of my trip I have gotten to eat some pretty interesting things. I found my love for mexican and spicy food in mexico, Enjoyed mouth watering seafood in Caye Caulker Belize to the delicious artery clogging poutine of Canada.

But nothing quite as weird as eating Cuy(Guinea Pig) on the equator line in Ecuador.

So what is Cuy? Cuy is a native guinea pig found in the andean regions of south America, It’s a traditional food of Peruvian, Colombian and Ecuadorian people.

So when I was given the opportunity to give it a try while visiting the equator Mitad Del Mundo I couldn’t resist.

I ended up splitting a whole guinea pig with another traveller as being a budget backpacker used to eating $2-$5 USD a day on food  and a whole guinea pig came in at $20 (Ouch!)

So they roasted our guinea pigs over an open fire out the back

When it came out on our plate it was literally a whole guinea pig  on a plate with a couple of potatoes, The skin was pretty tough and it tasted a cross between greasy chicken and fish. Wasn’t really my kind of thing and I only managed to eat about half of my half guinea pig.

I talked to some other people that have tried it and said that they really enjoyed it so maybe the one I had just wasn’t prepared properly. I think that it would be better in a stew

Cuy

They don’t exactly look….appetizing here

How about you? What is the most interesting food you have eaten?

I have heard about Cuy many times, but never been to that region. I’d definitely be up for trying it though. Looks interesting! Anyways, congrats on your trip amigo, I’ll be following your future ones to Asia/Europe!

Hey! I read some articles of your blog. Being in Baños at the moment and here costs a guinea pig 20 $. Totally rip-off cause we are on budget as well. But I definetely wanna try this! Then I read this article and was happy to read, that there is a opportunity to eat it cheaper. We will go to Quito afterwards. Can you please tell me, where we can find that place you grilled the guinea pig on your own? I wanna do this too! Where are you at the moment?
Greetings from Ecuador and keep on blogging!
    Fine
