Once again it’s Foodgasm Friday, It’s also the last friday I will be in my home country of Australia. As I leave on Monday to begin my backpacking adventure through South East Asia, Before travelling onwards to work and travel Europe for the next 2 years. While there are many things in Australia that I am going to miss, The food will always hold a special place in my heart (and stomach). So this week I present to you some of my favorite Australian foods.
Meat Pies & Sausage Rolls
Meat pie’s and sausage rolls are everywhere in Australia, You can grab them from bakery’s all over. They are simple and when covered with a bit of tomato sauce they make for a delicious pastry wrapped feast. (Especially when your drunk at 3am haha)
Fish and Chips
This is one of the main thing’s I missed while I was living in Canada. In Australia there are fish and chip stores everywhere. There’s nothing better that grabbing a bunch of deep fried fish, calamari and of course my favorite food, chips. Then heading down to the beach and chowing down on some delicious deep fried goodness while you watch the waves roll in.
An Australian & New Zealand desert favorite Pavlova, This meringue based plate of sugary deliciousness is typically topped with strawberries, passion fruit, kiwifruit and cream.
My mum makes a pretty mean Pavlova 😀
Then there are the snacks, I love me a good bag of chips. However in all my travels across USA, Canada and Latin America I wasn’t able to find any of the chicken flavored awesome variety that I loved. I also have a bit of a weak spot for Pizza flavored Shapes and one of my fondest memory of them is when a bunch of Aussies and I drunkenly made a pizza shape pizza in Los Angeles, It was crunchy and surprisingly delicious.
This chocolate is AMAZING!!!, I know there is cadbury chocolate all over the world, But I still think the Cadbury chocolate made in Australia was way better than the Cadbury chocolate I tried in Canada. Maybe it’s just a personal preference?
There’s nothing more Australian than firing up the barbie and cooking up a feed of BBQ’d goodness, Whether it’s steaks, Sausages or a few prawns. Hell you can BBQ just about anything. I’m going to miss having regular BBQ’s. In the picture below I’m cooking up some Kangaroo sausages and Crocodile tail, It doesn’t get much more Australian than that.
Vegemite On Toast!
I saved the best to last, Nothing is more Australian than Vegemite. I know many Aussie backpackers that travel with a jar in their bags (Myself included). It’s great on toast or biscuits and makes for a great addition to free hostel breakfasts when on the road.
What are your favorite Australian food’s? Or favorite food’s you really miss from your home country when you travel overseas?
