It’s crazy to think that it’s been one year since I entered the wonderful world of travel blogging. When I first started I  was at one of the lowest points of my life. In my first post “Building up from Rock Bottom“, I explained how I had just come out of an 8 year relationship and been laid off work.  My interest in my career was waning, and with all the main pillars that I had based my life on crumbling around me, I decided to embark on a solo backpacking adventure through Latin America to see some of the world, put myself out of my comfort zone and plan what I wanted to do in the next phase of my life.

Door's on one chapter of my life were closing.

Door’s on one chapter of my life were closing.

I originally created this blog as a way to keep friends and family up to date of my travels, as well as show other people that anyone, Even a shy computer nerd who had never traveled solo or even been in a hostel until last year can go out and see the world. I never even got my passport until 2010. I also wanted to show that no matter how bad your circumstances in life might be there is always a way to turn something negative into a positive experience.

And thats what I did, I left my home of 2 years in Montreal Canada with nothing more than a backpack and a one way ticket to Mexico, with a rough plan to travel Latin America. The Next 4.5 months were some of the most challenging and rewarding month’s of my life. I visited over 13 countries, Met amazing travel friends some of which I know I will stay in touch with for the rest of my life. I have experienced things I never even imagined myself doing.

It certainly has been one hell of a ride. If you had have told me at the middle of last year that this is what I was going to do in the next year there is no way I would have believed it. But hey life is unexpected. Long as you can make the best of a good situation and are willing to put yourself out there and give it a go good things will happen.

They say that most blogs don’t last more of a year

This blog has to have been one of the longest hobbies I have stuck with, Anyone who knows me knows that I pick and drop new hobbies like they are going out of fashion. The fact that I am hearing writing this post is for me a great achievement in itself.

Over the last year my eyes were opened to an amazing community of bloggers and fellow travelers,All travelling for different reasons, Some short term just looking to escape their daily life and see the world for a bit, others on longer journey’s travelling around the world on a quest to find themselves, and see all of what this great planet has to offer. The amount of support and love I have received from all of my followers has been extraordinary; I want to thank each and every person who has ever taken the time out of their day to pay my blog a visit. I love sharing my journey with all of you.

So what comes next for Nerd Travels

As I write this I am currently in Bangkok Thailand only 4 days into my next big adventure,Backpacking through South East Asia for 3.5 weeks and then going on to work/travel around UK/Europe. I am attending my first travel conference “TBEX” in Dublin along with some other super exciting blogging events which I will be announcing in an upcoming post. I am not sure what my future hold’s and I can’t even begin to tell you what I will be doing or where exactly I will be in a few months from now let n lone in a year.

But you know what that’s what makes life exciting!

I am going to just continue following my passions and doing what makes me happy. Right now that is travelling and exploring the world and sharing my experiences with all of you awesome readers. If I can inspire even one person to take that leap and have the life they have always wanted I will be beyond happy.

So follow your dreams everyone  no matter how hard they may seem to be to obtain. Don’t be scared to push your boundaries and step outside your comfort zone because that’s when you truly start finding out that you are capable  of amazing things you never thought possible

I am going to leave you with this video I watched a couple of a graduation speech that Neil Gaiman did. It has to be one of the most inspiring things I have watched and really resounds with me on so many levels

And you know what like Neil Gaiman say’s in that video I still feel everyday like there is going to be a knock on the door and a guy with a clipboard is going to tell me that it’s all over and that it’s time for me to go get back to reality and get a real job, where I have to work 9-5 again and wear a tie, And I wont be able to write and travel the world anymore. Haha

Congratulations! Blogs really are a labor of love. Looks like you made some headway, too! I had no idea just how important SEO and social media were…until we started blogging. Oy vey. Quite the hobby indeed.

    Happy blogiversary! =)
